Gloves insulated for warmth
September 5, 2018 - Milwaukee Tool enhances comfort and safety on the jobsite with the introduction of Winter Insulated Gloves. Designed to provide ultimate warmth and all-day comfort, the new gloves are EN 511-rated* for warmth in cold environments and thoughtfully developed with proprietary knitting that provides the protection necessary at ANSI/ISEA-rated Cut Levels 1 and 3.
The gloves utilize a warm, acrylic terry liner that helps users keep their hands warm in the coldest conditions. A secure dual liner keeps users’ hands warm and is designed to ensure that it does not separate from the gloves after extensive use on the jobsite.
The Cut Level 1 Winter Insulated Gloves are ideal for material handling and general-purpose remodeling applications. These gloves are constructed with 15-gauge nylon outer liner for overall breathability and high dexterity in the fingertips, and a 10-gauge inner liner. They also feature a 1/2 double-dipped latex micro finish for improved water resistance and warmth.
The Cut Level 3 Winter Insulated Gloves are ideal for demolition, wire-stripping, and pipe-threading application, and feature ANSI/ISEA cut level 3 protection to help prevent injuries from sharp objects on the jobsite. These gloves are constructed with high-dexterity 15-gauge nylon and a high-performance polyethylene outer liner for superior protection. A 3/4 double-dipped latex micro finish improves water resistance, warmth, and overall dexterity.
Milwaukee Tool’s new Winter Insulated Gloves are designed to provide users with EN 511 and ANSI-rated protection, all-day comfort, ultimate durability and the best dexterity for handling small objects – without sacrificing jobsite productivity.
*The EN 511 test method measures gloves’ protection from cold in two ways: (1) How the gloves’ material leads cold, and (2) The material’s insulating capacity.
**The new ANSI/ISEA 105 scale and test method provides new cut resistance classification levels.
***Cut testing not necessary for high performance gloves. See TDM Cut Test for EN results.

Sensor protects machine operators
August 22, 2018 - The new SMART Non-Contact Safety Sensor SRF from Altech Corp. protects machine operators from potential injury by monitoring moveable separating protective devices (such as doors, gates, panels, and hoods) and shutting down or preventing startup of a machine when a device is not properly closed. The SRF sensor additionally is the only safety sensor currently on the market integrating an intelligent diagnostic system, which collects data for early detection of machine faults and allows for timely maintenance fixes. Sensors are available with diagnostics function that can be monitored with I/O Link supporting Industry 4.0 implementation and Smart Factory operations.
SRF (Safety RFID) sensors are compact (36.5 by 26.2 by 15 mm) and will ideally suit any application where safety switches (Type 2) or sensors (Type 4) would be used, including machines for packaging, turning and milling, food processing, woodworking, and injection molding, among many others.
Data for up to 20 different switch conditions can be monitored for each individual sensor, even when they are connected in a series for monitoring multiple access points. Critical data is stored in the sensor with a time stamp and can be reviewed even in the event of a power failure. The collected data can be viewed on a computer via I/O link or displayed on smartphones via NFC technology. Two levels of diagnostics (basic PNP and extended Daisy Chain Diagnostics) are available.
Up to 32 SRF sensors can be safely connected in series using standard four-wire unshielded cables with M12 connectors, which promotes plug-and-play installation convenience. A single cable linking sensor to sensor eliminates unwieldy wire bundles and typical accessory costs.
The sensors are offered with three different coding levels. Low level coded sensors are activated with any SRF actuator. High level coded sensors are paired with one specific actuator. Unique level coded sensors can only be paired once. After pairing, the sensor cannot be activated with any other actuator.
The SRF sensors also offer "Fault Tolerant Outputs,” which prevents unnecessary machine shutdowns. If both OSSD safety outputs are lost, caused by an unsafe condition (such as a door being opened), the machine will immediately shut down. However, if only one output is lost (caused by a fault in the sensor or wiring), the sensor will indicate the condition with a flashing code and transmit the information via the DCD system (if used). After 20 minutes the machine will be shut down.
SRF sensors possess the highest safety ratings (PLe, Cat. 4 according to EN ISO 13849-1 and SIL CL3 according to DIN EN 62061) and are in compliance with ISO 14119. The system’s transmitter, receiver, connectors, and wiring are IP69-rated to withstand harsh processes, including wash-downs.
Unlike traditional keyed switch or reed switch technologies, SRF sensors are especially rugged and immune to vibration, Solid-state components perform wear-free during the system’s expected service life rating up to 20 years. Custom versions can be developed to meet specific application requirements or demands.

Cut-off wheels offer fast cutting
August 21, 2018 - Saint-Gobain Abrasives has introduced its new Norton QUANTUM3™ RightCut Wheels, adding cut-off capability to its Norton QUANTUM3™ (NQ3) line which also includes Depressed Center Grinding Wheels and Combination Wheels. FABTECH 2018 attendees can see the entire Norton NQ3 Grinding Wheels Line at Booth #C11110 at Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, November 6 - 8.
In comparison tests, NQ3 RightCut Wheels have several key benefits over competitive wheels. True to the Norton Quantum3 technology, and its previously released NQ3 wheels, the new Norton Quantum3 RightCut wheels are designed with the operator in mind. It boasts a more rounded grain than precision-shaped ceramic grains found in the market today. Being rounded allows for faster cutting action, with less vibration, which is instrumental in reducing operator fatigue when cutting metal all day.
When working on thinner materials, or in the case where operators need to get the job done quickly, the 0.045"NQ3 RightCut wheel is ideal. Due to the proprietary grain, the wheel easily cuts through the workpiece quickly, increasing efficiency and saving time.
"The bond system of the NQ3 technology allows for better mix control during the manufacturing process. This better mix keeps the individual grains from clumping together, for a more even wear of the cut-off wheel," said Alicia Castagna Ph.D., Norton |Saint-Gobain Abrasives, Product Manager Thin Wheels. This is also true with the 1/16 in. NQ3 RighCut wheels when cutting thicker materials. Longer life translates to more productivity, keeping the operator working smarter, not harder.
The Norton Quantum3 line of RightCut wheels are offered in four Type 01/41 and three Type 27/42 cutting application SKU’s. All products are currently in stock. These wheels are available in 4-1/2 in., 5 in. and 6 in. are made in the USA.

Cleaner designed to replace solvents
August 20, 2018 - Houghton International has developed an advanced cleaner designed to replace solvents in precision cleaning applications. Houghto-Rinse RTD™ is a water-based, non-flammable, ready-to-use cleaner that delivers outstanding process performance and surface appearance in a wide range of surface finishing applications.
Houghto-Rinse RTD is a direct replacement for highly volatile solvents in applications where flammability, health, safety and environmental factors are concerns. It is designed to remove surface residues such as spray paint, marker pen, ink, glue, grease and production soil prior to final inspection, assembly or packaging. It is safe for use on all surfaces including aluminum, steel, magnesium, plastics, painted surfaces, and fiberglass. Its cleaning effectiveness and non-residue properties make it particularly valuable for critical cleaning applications where surface appearance is important.
“Extensive field testing has demonstrated that Houghto-Rinse RTD delivers outstanding cleaning performance on a broad range of applications,” said Tony Pavesich, Houghton Surface Finishing Industry Leader. “It dries quickly, leaves no residue, and is ready-to-use, so it improves product quality and process efficiency.” The product is also economical, low-odor, and contains rust prevention properties, which may be important when used to clean steel components in critical applications.
