High visibility safety vests
July 31, 2018 - The John Tillman Co. announced the launch of its new line of high visibility safety vests. The Tillman high visibility safety vests offer functional design with features users need to help them be more efficient at the job site. “When we started designing the Tillman safety vests, we started with the value proposition that the vests must be comfortable, durable, practical and provide the user, and their company, a great value,” said Jeff Shipley, Director of Marketing for Tillman.
“The baseline when designing the vests were that every vest had to be ANSI 107 Type R, Class 2 compliant,” said Shipley. “That being said, the family of safety vests had to be comfortable, functional, lightweight and, well, look cool,” said Shipley.
During the development process, Tillman watched how users worked and how their safety vest interacted with their daily work routine. “We quickly realized that a person’s safety vest just isn’t a bright yellow vest with reflective stripes, often times a safety vest is their office, in the field, or the warehouse,” said Shipley. With the integration of technology in the workplace, vests have to offer features that allow the user to work more efficiently. This includes pockets for phones, identification pouches to more around the job site easier and larger pockets for tablet devices, notebooks and larger gloves like welding gloves.”
Tillman designed their high-vis safety vests from the ground up for welding, construction, manufacturing, industrial workers and tradespeople. These premium safety vests offer quality materials, extra reinforcements, durable construction and exceptional comfort for hours of wear. Tillman’s goal is simple; keep workers seen and safe; only the way Tillman can do it. Quality is built into every Tillman safety vest, including the baseline economy vest. It’s Tillman’s attention to detail.
Tillman included six high-vis safety vests in their line-up with four of the vests offering fire-resistant materials and one of the vests providing HRC 2 protection. Being the market leader in Welding PPE, Tillman had to look at those working near welding, grinding or torch work that might require a FR vest. “Often times we saw sparks shooting out from a grinding wheel as well as sparks and spatter raining down from floors above, our fire-resistant vests are designed to protect workers throughout a job site while being affordable.” said Shipley. Not everyone requires a NFPA 70E-2012, tested to ASTM F1506 with an HRC rating, yet they do need an affordable fire-resistant vest, this is what three of the Tillman FR safety vests provide.
Features
While Tillman is a leader in Welder PPE, we designed the Tillman Safety Vests to be functional in just about every occupation from construction to warehouse work to oil fields, just to name a few. “We developed the vests with the user’s needs in mind and the way they work with extra pockets, mic tabs and functionality to keep them productive in the field,” said Shipley. Tillman vests feature designs through proven concepts:
- Chemically treated, lightweight, 100 percent ultra-cool fire-resistant mesh on the Journeyman, Operator and Performance vests.
- 6.2 oz. Modacrylic flame-resistant material that meets the requirements for ASTM F1506, HRC 2, and NFPA 70E-2012 on the Fire Resistant & Arc Rated vest.
- ANSI 107 Type R, Class 2 compliant on all vests.
- Reinforced black trim for added durability and an added touch of style.
- A Mic tab on the 2000, 2005, 2010, 2020 and 2030 vests.
- Large and numerous pockets for added storage on the Journeyman, Operator and Performance vests.
- Added color contrast on the 2020 Operator model for greater awareness in the field.
- Reflective awareness at dusk, dawn and night.

Gloves Offer Glide Patches at Common Pressure Points
July 26, 2018 - What sets the Tillman 49 MIG glove apart from other MIG welding gloves are the glide patches Tillman incorporated into the outer side of the palm and the extended 5” cuff of the glove. These glide patches provide needed padding at pressure points where welders often feel heat or fatigue for added comfort and to ease of movement when welding.
The Tillman 49 offers a soft, top grain Goatskin palm, forefinger and thumb that for the feel and dexterity a welder requires with a durable Cowhide split leather back and cuff. To help welders execute precise welds, the seamless forefinger provides an excellent feel when operating a MIG gun or a plasma torch. A thumb strap and patch provide reinforcement and added strength for longer wear. To help with heat buildup on longer welds, the Tillman 49 offers a fleece lining for heat protection without the bulk. And of course, the Tillman 49 is sewn with Kevlar® stitching for longevity and flame resistance.
The Tillman 49 is the ideal glove for MIG welding, Torch work, Plasma cutting and even light stick welding. When comfort, dexterity and performance are required, turn to the Tillman 49.

Magnetic drilling units deliver more power, versatility and safety
July 10, 2018 - Walter Surface Technologies, Windsor, Connecticut, has fully redesigned its ICECUT™ line of powerful magnetic drilling units and annular cutters.
Think ICECUT™ and think power, versatility and mobility. At 22 lbs. and 27 lbs. respectively, the ICECUT™ 100 and ICECUT™ 200 mag drills are lightweight champs that punch above their weight.
Looking for powerful, efficient drilling made safe and easy? ICECUT’s ACCUDRILL™ technology protects against overload, overheating and reduces cutter breakage risk.
ICECUT’s ergonomic control panel eases operations with centralized controls that enable efficient drilling on either side of the unit.
ICECUT’s mandrel support absorbs vibrations for stability and perfect centering, ensuring the motor and chuck are perfectly aligned. Operators get precise cutting with little chance of cutter damage.
ICECUT’s lightweight, ergonomic and smooth-grip handle makes unit positioning and drilling operations easy. The unit also features a separate, quick-release and reversible handle for easy positioning in confined spaces.
“Walter’s newly redesigned ICECUT™ units are mobile, lightweight and powerful enough for any job site,” explains Ryan Boyd, Product Manager, Tooling and Power Tools. “There’s a tremendous range of features that guarantee the most productive drilling system, and with our ACCUDRILL™ pressure guide, there is almost no risk of motor overloading, overheating, or premature cutter breakage.”
ICECUT’s integrated wiring eliminates obstructions when drilling or repositioning the unit. No wires mean no mishandling failures. “That’s convenience,” says Boyd.
The drilling unit’s steel sliding guard keeps operators safe, too. Engage this safety feature for worry-free drilling, free of errant chips and lubricant splash.
Operators will also appreciate ICECUT’s easy maintenance. Direct access to the unit’s carbon brushes make tune-ups simple and keep ICECUT’s powerful motor operating at maximum power.
When mobility is key, check out the ICECUT™ 100. Its one-speed, 850-watt motor delivers 600 RPMs at 8.5 amps.
When versatility and power is a must, look to the ICECUT™ 200. Its two-speed 1200-watt motor delivers 300-600 RPMs at 12 amps and is ideal for a wide range of job site operations.
What’s power without drilling speed? Walter’s latest core cutters are guaranteed to drill more holes faster. The company’s redesigned annular cutters are toughened with a sophisticated mixture of high-speed steel and aluminum for longer life.
More resistant to instant impact and stress when drilling under load, these annular cutters are less brittle and impervious to deformation.
“ICECUT is a simply a versatile, powerful and safe line of magnetic drilling units and annular cutters,” says Boyd. “It’s the ultimate core cutting system that helps our customers work better.”

Blind threaded inserts provide strong, permanent, and reusable threads
July 10, 2018 - ATLAS® SpinTite® blind threaded inserts from PennEngineering®, Danboro, Pennsylvania, provide strong, permanent, and reusable threads in thin sheet materials where only one side is accessible for hardware installation. Installation is performed from the accessible “front” side using spin-spin tooling technology. The inserts then become permanently mounted on the “back” side to accept a mating screw for final component attachment. The “blind” installation capability especially suits applications such as tubing, extrusions, and others where access to the back side is either limited or nonexistent.
These steel, aluminum, brass, or stainless steel inserts ideally replace tapped holes, weld nuts, rivets, self-drilling or tapping screws, and through-bolted applications necessitating loose hardware. They support close-to-edge applications and can be installed at any stage during the production process (even after assemblies have been painted). In service, the inserts exhibit high thread strength and high torque-out resistance.
ATLAS SpinTite inserts have been designed for use with panels or sheets of any hardness or material (including metal, plastics, and fiberglass) and as thin as .020” / 0.51mm. They additionally can assemble multiple dissimilar materials during installation, eliminating any need to perform spot welding or other secondary operations, saving time and money during production.
This family of inserts includes half-hex shank low-profile head, rib-wall minimized-profile head, rib-wall low-profile head, thin-wall low-profile head, and swaging low-profile head versions. A variety of available thread sizes range from #6-32 to 1/2”-13 and M4 to M12, depending on insert type. Custom inserts also can be engineered to satisfy specific application performance requirements.
