Flux cored wire offers crack resistance, lowers total cost for LNG fuel, storage tank applications
May 12, 2020 - ESAB Welding & Cutting Products, Annapolis Junction, Maryland, has globally introduced Cryo-Shield Ni9, a Ni Cr Mo alloy flux cored wire used for all-position welding of 9 percent Ni steel LNG fuel and storage tanks with 100 percent CO2 shielding gas. This modified 625-type wire offers excellent crack resistance and is superior to conventional NiCrMo-3 wires. Mechanical properties are similar to Hastelloy ENiMo-13 flux cored wires but at lower purchase price because of its modified formula. Further, because it uses 100 percent CO2 shielding gas instead of an argon blend, it lowers operating cost. The wire carries approvals from the ABS, BV, DNV GL, KR, LR and CCS classification societies.
“We developed Cyro-Shield Ni9 in response to ship propulsion systems shifting from heavy fuel oil to LNG fuel to reduce oxide emissions,” says Neil Farrow, Global Product Manager – Cored Wires, ESAB. “This wire also meets the needs of LNG storage tank fabricators and other 9 percent Ni steel applications. In benchmark tests against leading 625-alloy wires, Cryo-Shield Ni9 provided superior crack-resistance tolerance, which is especially critical for root welding. Customer field tests with 100 percent CO2 shielding gas also confirmed better tolerance to porosity formation, wet-out for a flatter bead crown and slag release compared to conventional 625-alloy wires. In addition, the slag system supports all-position welding, including over-head.”
ESAB offers Cryo-Shield Ni9 in 1.2 mm diameter and packaged on 300 mm wire baskets or plastic spools; vacuum-seal foil packaging prevents moisture absorption. Typical as-welded mechanical properties are a yield strength of 440 MPa, tensile strength of 730 MPa, elongation of 44 percent and an impact value of 65 J at -196 oC.
Fire-resistant welding jacket offers breathable comfort with ANSI Level A2 Cut Resistance.
May 5, 2020 - Electric arc and welding splatter protective garments require a durable, high strength, high performance FR fabric that adds value without compromising comfort. The Tillman 9730 Welding Jacket delivers just that and is definitely not your basic welding jacket. The 9730 jacket begins with soft and comfortable, fire resistant 9-ounce U.S. made Westex® FR-7A® fabric and a Twaron®/Lenzing® blend for the sleeves with ANSI A2 Cut Resistance.
The FR-7A® fabric Tillman uses for the torso is designed to self-extinguish and complies with ASTM D6413-10 flammability test which requires a maximum char length of 5 inches or a maximum after flame of 2 seconds. FR-7A® material is also pre-shrunk for comfort and maintains its accurate size for the life of the jacket.
The sleeves of the 9730 are made of a twill weave of 40% Twaron® and 60% Lenzing FR® material where sparks and spatter have met their match. The Twaron® material offers strength, high thermal capability and ANSI/ISEA 105-2016 Level A2 Cut Resistance. The Lenzing FR® material offers flame resistance, comfort and moisture management. “The Twaron/Lenzing blend provide a welder better cut resistance, heat protection and better protection from sparks and spatter compared to a traditional leather sleeve” said Jeff Shipley, Tillman’s Director of Marketing.
The sleeves also meet the ARC Thermal Performance Test ASTM 1959, ATPV (cal/cm²) 10.6-12.1 and the ARC Thermal Performance of NFPA 7OE and Level 2.
One nice feature of the 9730 jacket, compared to a welding jacket with leather sleeves, is that the FR-7A® and the Twaron/Lenzing blend material can be laundered up to 50 home or 25 commercial home washings.
The 9730 offers a roomy inside pocket to store smaller items and is an ample thirty inches in length. The jacket is available in – Medium, Large, Extra Large, 2X and 3X.
Tillman’s 9730 is an outstanding fire-resistant welding jacket with breathable comfort, durability and ANSI Level A2 Cut Resistance.

MIG Glove Delivers Incredible Comfort
March 3, 2020 - Recently we were asked the question, “What sets the Tillman 1357 apart from other MIG welding gloves?” The answer: comfort and ANSI A7 cut resistance. The Tillman 1357 was designed so that dexterity was not compromised, and comfort was emphasized.
To achieve a glove that has a broken in feeling right off the shelf, Tillman searched for soft, pliable top grain and split cowhide leather. “With the addition of the ANSI A7 cut liner, it was critical that we started with soft, yet durable, cowhide for the welder to have a comfortable glove that is an extension of their hand” said Andrew Carpentier, a member of Tillman’s product development team.
To help MIG welders have an enhanced sense of feel and execute precise welds, a seamless top grain cowhide forefinger was implemented to provide an excellent feel when operating a MIG gun or a plasma torch. Tillman included a flexible wing thumb to allow added movement for a greater grip on the gun or a torch. “It’s all about the welders experience” said Carpentier. “Knowing welders use these gloves for hours at a time, we had to specifically tailor a product that accentuated comfort for an entire shift”.
During a shift, welders and fabricators handle a lot of material, much of which is sharp. The 1357 provides the welder with an ANSI A7 cut resistance by implementing Dupont™ Kevlar® interior lining. This provides enhanced cut resistance while maintaining the dexterity and comfort welders demand from Tillman.
The Tillman 1357 is the ideal glove for MIG welding, torch work, plasma cutting and even light stick welding. When comfort, dexterity and performance are required, turn to the Tillman 1357. The Tillman 1357 is offered in sizes S, M, L, XL, 2X and 3X and complies with the American National Standard for Hand Protection, ANSI ISEA 105-2016.
