PIPEWELD 78LH FLUX reduces out-gassing
December 6, 2018 - ESAB Welding & Cutting Products introduced PIPEWELD 78LH FLUX, a low hydrogen flux for longitudinal or spiral welding of pipeline steel grades, such as X70 and X80, using multi-wire submerged arc welding processes. A new flux formulation and production process enable PIPEWELD 78LH FLUX to meet the H4 classification of ≤ 4ml of diffusible hydrogen per 100g of weld metal as produced. Because of its low hydrogen formulation and its moisture resistance, PIPEWELD 78LH enables coating within a few hours after welding, improving throughput. The higher moisture pickup of other fluxes may cause out-gassing issues, when flux is left in the hopper for a long time and then pipe may need to sit for several days after welding to prevent “jeeping” (blistering).
“ESAB tested PIPEWELD 78LH versus competitive fluxes and the previous version of OK Flux 10.77 and proved that it reduces moisture pick-up and diffusible hydrogen levels,” states Halinson Campos, Product Business Manager - Filler Metals, ESAB.
ESAB guarantees the H4 classification when users receive the flux in an ESAB BigBag package, a 2,000- to 2,200-lb. bulk package made from a woven polypropylene material with a multi-layered aluminum lining that keeps moisture away during storage. PIPEWELD 78LH is also available in a 50-lb. Flux Pack™, which uses a thick LDPE material.
PIPEWELD 78LH controls the bead width and profile to deliver proper and adequate reinforcement. “A low transition angle between the weld crown and base plate prevents over-welding and the associated waste of filler metal, as well as cost saving in the later pipe coating operation, since the coating thickness can be reduced,” says Campos. “PIPEWELD 78LH also provides a smooth surface finish, even at high welding speeds. Because of its improved grain size, PIPEWELD 78LH can be recaptured and reused, prolonging the interval between flux hopper refills.
Multi-Wire SAW
ESAB specifically designed the flux for multi-wire submerged arc welding processes, such as twin-wire, tandem or ESAB’s patented Integrated Cold Electrode (ICE™). By feeding an electrically cold electrode into the weld puddle, ICE increases deposition rate without increasing heat input to help preserve mechanical and metallurgical properties.
Auto Darkening Welding Helmets offer larger viewing area
October 24, 2018 - Weldcote Metals Inc., Kings Mountain, North Carolina, a division of Zika Group, announces the availability of two lines of auto darkening welding helmets: Ultraview™ and Klearview™ in both standard and programmable styles.
The two welding helmet lines both have four arc sensors, a near instant (0.1 to 0.9 second) switching time, a solar cell with battery backup and true color filter optics. Both also feature an industry-leading, three-year warranty.
Weldcote’s Ultraview helmet line features an improved viewing area of 3.94 in. by 3.28 in., a light shade of three for grinding mode and dark shade setting of 5-9 as well as 9-13. The Klearview helmet line offers a 3.94 in. by 2.36 in. view area, a light shade of four for grinding mode, and a 9-13 dark shade setting.
Both lines come in a standard model and “Plus” programmable model. The programmable upgrade provides welders with three memory settings, allowing for better customization and personalization. Weldcote also offers replacement headgear, programmable and standard lens cartridges, lithium batteries and interchangeable inside or outside lens covers.
“With this line expansion, we can now offer welders a full line of choices, from entry level for new welders coming into the career, to experienced welders who know their preferred work settings and want a safety helmet that they can make their own,” said Joe O’Mera, CEO of Weldcote Metals. “This product launch is one of several initiatives that positions Weldcote as a high-quality, one-stop shop solution that helps manufacturers do their jobs better, easier and faster.”
Weldcote Metals was founded by Bill Roland, founding CEO and current president, and John Pandorf, co-founder and CFO, in 2006. Earlier this year, the company announced Zika Group and O’Mera as additional ownership, along with O’Mera being named CEO.

Welding Cap is perfect fit, comfortable
August 15, 2018 - The welding cap is an essential item for just about every welder. Unfortunately, designs for this important product have changed little over the years. Black Stallion® tilts the welding cap industry on its head with the introduction of the AH1630-GS – quite possible the most comfortable and best-fitting protective welding cap ever made.
Uniquely constructed of single-layer flame-resistant cotton, the AH1630-GS provides lightweight protection from sparks, with less heat trapping. The wearer’s head feels cooler in hot conditions.
The combination of 7 ounce FR cotton and 6 ounce FR cotton stretch knit provides a comfortably snug fit. Available in three sizes, the AH1630-GS fits nearly all head sizes and shapes. The deep crown allows the cap to be worn exactly where it should be -- just above the eyebrows and over the top of the ears.
Soft FR cotton stretch knit panels on each side of the cap are designed to provide chafe-free flame-resistant ear coverage.
The large bill on the cap, wider and longer than nearly any other welding cap available today, offers more neck protection from sparks and from sunburn and UV rays when welding outside. Hidden within the bill is a flap of durable 7 ounce FR cotton. When extended over a welding jacket collar, the flap provides even more neck protection.
Designed with durability for daily wear, the AH1630-GS is stitched with strong flame-resistant thread – the same thread Black Stallion® uses on their welding jackets and other protective garments. The AH1630-GS is machine washable, with flame-resistant protection through 50 home washings.

Welding jacket provides extra protection
August 15, 2018 - Now welders can work more safely around potential flash fire and arc flash hazards with the new NFPA 2112 & NFPA 70E Certified FR Cotton Welding Jacket (JF2220-GY) from Black Stallion®.
Constructed of durable 9 ounce flame-resistant treated cotton, the JF2220-GY meets ASTM F1506 requirements for flame resistance and is tested to maintain protection through 100 home washings or 50 commercial laundry cycles. Flame resistance is enhanced by the use of strong FR aramid threads throughout the jacket.
Certified to both NFPA 2112 and NFPA 70E standards, the JF2220-GY is designed for welders who may be exposed to short-duration thermal exposures from fire and arc flash hazards typically associated with Oil & Gas, Utility, and Industrial applications. With an Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV) of 10 cal/cm2, the jacket can be part of a Category 2 PPE program for work with potential exposure to energized electrical equipment.
Six front snaps on the jacket are covered with a layer of FR cotton to eliminate conduction of electricity in the event of an arc flash incident. These six front snaps are reinforced with leather backing to reduce the risk of tearing and eliminate pull through.
Other jacket features include a standup welder’s collar to protect the neck from sparks and debris, an outside scribe pocket on the left sleeve, and a convenient inside pocket. The extended 32” length offers additional torso protection.
