November 2017 - Legendary outlaw Billy the Kid was ambushed and assassinated four years before Norton Co. was founded in 1885 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Approximately 105 years later, in 1990, Norton was acquired by one of the world’s largest industrial conglomerates, Saint-Gobain.
Now known as Norton | Saint-Gobain Abrasives, the company produces abrasives, grinding, cutting, blending, finishing and polishing solutions that are used by manufacturers shaping materials worldwide.
Norton | Saint-Gobain Abrasives has developed a new product, Quantum3 Combination Wheels to its line of depressed-center grinding wheels.
The combo wheels, available in 4.5 in., 5 in., 6 in., 7 in. and 9 in. diameters for hubbed and non-hubbed grinding tools, are designed for multiple applications such as general fabricating, oil rig building and repair, rail, container and pipeline manufacturing.
Victor Ramirez, thin wheels product engineer at Norton | Saint-Gobain, says the combo wheels’ versatility makes it especially useful for welders and those working in maintenance and repair organizations.
“Typically, ⅛-in. grinding wheels are used in a welding process,” says Ramirez. “When using this wheel at 30 degrees, you can create a bevel in a pipe and help create land for whenever you need to join two pipes.
“When using the wheel at 90 degrees and feathering,” he continues, “you can hold pipes together prior to a root pass. Once a root pass has been laid down, 100 percent of the weld is required prior to the hot pass. This is another instance when you run a 90-degree application combo wheel down the root pass. This creates a U-shape in the bottom of the weld and ensures that the next pass has full penetration.”
Durability
Ramirez claims that Quantum3 wheel can help users bolster productivity and reduce the amount of downtime because they are changing abrasives less often. Ramirez says lab and real-world testing have shown Quantum3 has a 40 percent greater lifespan than its closest competitor.
This product differentiates itself from comparable items on the market in three ways, he says.
“First, our product has the highest combination in technology between our proprietary and exclusive sharp ceramic grain and bond technology and that’s how users receive the best performance out of a combination wheel.
“Secondly, increasing the metal removal rate and decreasing a wheel’s wear is crucial and Quantum3 achieves that. Also, Quantum3 combo wheels provide the user with a unique grinding experience. This is a wheel that can be used for many grinding and cutting applications. It removes metal fast, blends smoothly, and completes feathering and root pass applications like no other wheel.”
Adds Ramirez, “Seeing is believing so by using this wheel, customers will see the difference in the Norton Quantum3 combo wheel versus others in the market.” He tested it out and notes, “Prior to NQ3 Combo Wheels, I had never used a combo wheel that allowed me to remove metal at such a high rate while maintaining its integrity.”
The Norton Quantum3 combo was designed to improve comfort levels for operators, increase throughput, curtail grinding time, and reduce unnecessary stoppages and waste. Improved comfort levels are vital because operator fatigue is hazardous and can hinder all aspects of an operation.
Perhaps most importantly, by minimizing labor and processing costs, NQ3 can help secure a maximum return on investment. Norton | Saint-Gobain Abrasives, like an iconic gunfighter in the old Wild West, is shooting down problems for all types of metalworkers and fabricators.
