Welding jacket provides extra protection
August 15, 2018 - Now welders can work more safely around potential flash fire and arc flash hazards with the new NFPA 2112 & NFPA 70E Certified FR Cotton Welding Jacket (JF2220-GY) from Black Stallion®.
Constructed of durable 9 ounce flame-resistant treated cotton, the JF2220-GY meets ASTM F1506 requirements for flame resistance and is tested to maintain protection through 100 home washings or 50 commercial laundry cycles. Flame resistance is enhanced by the use of strong FR aramid threads throughout the jacket.
Certified to both NFPA 2112 and NFPA 70E standards, the JF2220-GY is designed for welders who may be exposed to short-duration thermal exposures from fire and arc flash hazards typically associated with Oil & Gas, Utility, and Industrial applications. With an Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV) of 10 cal/cm2, the jacket can be part of a Category 2 PPE program for work with potential exposure to energized electrical equipment.
Six front snaps on the jacket are covered with a layer of FR cotton to eliminate conduction of electricity in the event of an arc flash incident. These six front snaps are reinforced with leather backing to reduce the risk of tearing and eliminate pull through.
Other jacket features include a standup welder’s collar to protect the neck from sparks and debris, an outside scribe pocket on the left sleeve, and a convenient inside pocket. The extended 32” length offers additional torso protection.

High visibility safety vests
July 31, 2018 - The John Tillman Co. announced the launch of its new line of high visibility safety vests. The Tillman high visibility safety vests offer functional design with features users need to help them be more efficient at the job site. “When we started designing the Tillman safety vests, we started with the value proposition that the vests must be comfortable, durable, practical and provide the user, and their company, a great value,” said Jeff Shipley, Director of Marketing for Tillman.
“The baseline when designing the vests were that every vest had to be ANSI 107 Type R, Class 2 compliant,” said Shipley. “That being said, the family of safety vests had to be comfortable, functional, lightweight and, well, look cool,” said Shipley.
During the development process, Tillman watched how users worked and how their safety vest interacted with their daily work routine. “We quickly realized that a person’s safety vest just isn’t a bright yellow vest with reflective stripes, often times a safety vest is their office, in the field, or the warehouse,” said Shipley. With the integration of technology in the workplace, vests have to offer features that allow the user to work more efficiently. This includes pockets for phones, identification pouches to more around the job site easier and larger pockets for tablet devices, notebooks and larger gloves like welding gloves.”
Tillman designed their high-vis safety vests from the ground up for welding, construction, manufacturing, industrial workers and tradespeople. These premium safety vests offer quality materials, extra reinforcements, durable construction and exceptional comfort for hours of wear. Tillman’s goal is simple; keep workers seen and safe; only the way Tillman can do it. Quality is built into every Tillman safety vest, including the baseline economy vest. It’s Tillman’s attention to detail.
Tillman included six high-vis safety vests in their line-up with four of the vests offering fire-resistant materials and one of the vests providing HRC 2 protection. Being the market leader in Welding PPE, Tillman had to look at those working near welding, grinding or torch work that might require a FR vest. “Often times we saw sparks shooting out from a grinding wheel as well as sparks and spatter raining down from floors above, our fire-resistant vests are designed to protect workers throughout a job site while being affordable.” said Shipley. Not everyone requires a NFPA 70E-2012, tested to ASTM F1506 with an HRC rating, yet they do need an affordable fire-resistant vest, this is what three of the Tillman FR safety vests provide.
Features
While Tillman is a leader in Welder PPE, we designed the Tillman Safety Vests to be functional in just about every occupation from construction to warehouse work to oil fields, just to name a few. “We developed the vests with the user’s needs in mind and the way they work with extra pockets, mic tabs and functionality to keep them productive in the field,” said Shipley. Tillman vests feature designs through proven concepts:
- Chemically treated, lightweight, 100 percent ultra-cool fire-resistant mesh on the Journeyman, Operator and Performance vests.
- 6.2 oz. Modacrylic flame-resistant material that meets the requirements for ASTM F1506, HRC 2, and NFPA 70E-2012 on the Fire Resistant & Arc Rated vest.
- ANSI 107 Type R, Class 2 compliant on all vests.
- Reinforced black trim for added durability and an added touch of style.
- A Mic tab on the 2000, 2005, 2010, 2020 and 2030 vests.
- Large and numerous pockets for added storage on the Journeyman, Operator and Performance vests.
- Added color contrast on the 2020 Operator model for greater awareness in the field.
- Reflective awareness at dusk, dawn and night.

Gloves Offer Glide Patches at Common Pressure Points
July 26, 2018 - What sets the Tillman 49 MIG glove apart from other MIG welding gloves are the glide patches Tillman incorporated into the outer side of the palm and the extended 5” cuff of the glove. These glide patches provide needed padding at pressure points where welders often feel heat or fatigue for added comfort and to ease of movement when welding.
The Tillman 49 offers a soft, top grain Goatskin palm, forefinger and thumb that for the feel and dexterity a welder requires with a durable Cowhide split leather back and cuff. To help welders execute precise welds, the seamless forefinger provides an excellent feel when operating a MIG gun or a plasma torch. A thumb strap and patch provide reinforcement and added strength for longer wear. To help with heat buildup on longer welds, the Tillman 49 offers a fleece lining for heat protection without the bulk. And of course, the Tillman 49 is sewn with Kevlar® stitching for longevity and flame resistance.
The Tillman 49 is the ideal glove for MIG welding, Torch work, Plasma cutting and even light stick welding. When comfort, dexterity and performance are required, turn to the Tillman 49.

Stretch-Back FR Cotton Welding Jacket
May 21, 2018 - Staying cool, comfortable, and protected while welding is now easier with the new Stretch-Back FR Cotton Welding Jacket (JF1625-NG) from Black Stallion.
The lightweight stretch-back welding jacket offers all the protection of a Black Stallion standard welding jacket, with the added comfort of a flame-resistant cotton stretch knit back panel.
The looped knit yarns of the back panel are extremely flexible, offering comfortable stretch. This horizontal stretch provides just the right amount of “give” as a welder moves his shoulders and arms. These looped knit yarns also allow more air to flow through the fabric. This increased airflow provides more breathable comfort and can create a cooling effect as the job heats up.
And, the seven ounce cotton stretch knit back panel includes ASTM F1506 compliant flame resistance. Welders get the added benefit of comfort and breathability without sacrificing protection.
The front, shoulders, arms, and neck of the JF1625-NG are constructed of nine ounce flame-resistant cotton. The jacket offers protection for most light welding applications and includes all the high-quality, innovative features you expect from Black Stallion. The stand-up welder’s collar, with snap closure, helps keep sparks off the neck. And, the extended 32” length offers enhanced torso protection.
Six powder-coated stainless steel front snaps secure the jacket with less gapping. Other welding jackets use as little as four buttons, leaving wide gaps for sparks to potentially penetrate. The six front snaps are reinforced with leather backing to reduce the risk of tearing.
The new Stretch-Back FR Cotton Welding Jacket (JF1625-NG) from Black Stallion is available through independent welding and safety distributors nationwide.
