New non-contact, RFID safety switches with diagnostic capabilities
October 4, 2019 - Banner Engineering, Minneapolis, announced the release of SI-RF Series RFID safety switches for monitoring doors, gates, and other moveable machine safeguards.
SI-RF Series safety switches utilize RFID technology to monitor mechanical guards separating personnel from a hazard. They can be deployed alone to safeguard a single machine access point or in a cascade series to simplify the safeguarding of multiple access points. Cascade models can be connected in a series of up to 32 switches using a standard 4-wire cable, T-adaptors, an end plug, and just two terminals on a safety controller.
Used alone or in a series, SI-RF Series safety switches achieve Category 4, PL e, or SIL CL 3 safety ratings. Each switch consists of an RFID safety sensor that detects the presence, absence, or movement of an RFID coded actuator installed on a guard. Outputs on each sensor in a cascade series are continuously monitored to detect any faults, eliminating the possibility of fault masking at any point in the system and ensuring operation at the highest levels of safety.
The In-Series Diagnostics (ISD) communication protocol provides performance and status information from each sensor in a cascade series to the PLC and/or HMI. Notification is sent for the opening or closing of a door, mismatched or misaligned sensors and actuators, and a range of additional system health attributes.
SI-RF Series RFID safety switches are available in low, high, and unique code models to meet the tamper resistance needs of a wide range of applications. They have a rugged, IP69 construction, a non-contact design with no moving parts, and a very high tolerance to misalignment. They will perform reliably in challenging applications where exposure to high-pressure, high-temperature washdown as well as machine vibration and impact are possible.
Compact tower lights for use on small machines
October 30, 2018 - Banner Engineering, Minneapolis, announced the release of the TL30 Basic Series, compact tower lights for use on small machines and in work areas with limited space.
TL30 Basic tower lights have a slim 30 mm cylindrical body that fits in space-constrained areas. Their compact form factor is well suited to smaller machines. In addition, the comfortable light output is ideally suited for applications where staff regularly work in close proximity to the tower light. These multicolor indicators support two to five color segments and an optional audible segment for a total of up to six segments in each tower light.
The release of the TL30 Basic expands the offering of tower lights available from Banner Engineering to include 30 mm models, in addition to the 50 mm TL50 Series and the 70 mm TL70 Series. Like these tower lights, TL30 Basic tower lights utilize LED lights for a long operational life and have a segmented design with translucent windows that appear gray when off to prevent false indication caused by ambient light.
TL30 Basic tower lights are completely self-contained, requiring no controller for operation and come fully assembled for rapid deployment in small- or large-scale applications. They are the most cost-effective tower light available.
TL30 Basic tower lights are designed to provide clear, easy-to-see status indication and operator guidance on wire bonders, printing machines, bench tops, tabletop scales, collaborative robots, inspection and testing machines, lab equipment, HMIs, and similar small machines and equipment.

Sensor offers precise detection
Banner Engineering, a leading provider of technology for industrial automation, today announced the release of VS8 Series Miniature Sensors for precise detection in applications with extremely limited space.
Sensors in the VS8 Series have a space-saving form factor (21.1 mm x 14.6 mm x 8 mm) for use in confined spaces and near moving parts. They are available in red laser, red LED, or blue LED models with opposed, retroreflective, adjustable, or fixed-field background suppression sensing modes. This versatility allows companies to match the sensing technology to the application.
VS8 Series sensors detect very small parts and other difficult targets that challenge many sensors. Red laser models have a bright, precise spot for detecting multicolored targets and objects as small as 0.5 mm. Blue LED models reliably detect targets with dark or reflective surfaces and transparent objects without requiring a reflector. Red LED models are cost-effective, multi-purpose sensors that detect a wide range of targets.
Industry standard side mounting holes with 15 mm spacing facilitate installation on new or existing equipment. The dovetail mounting option allows ±10° tip/pivot adjustments for quick, precise alignment of the sensor. High-visibility status LEDs, electronic push-button, and remote input teach make it easy to program the sensors. These features support rapid integration and simplify operation.
VS8 Series sensors are ideal for a wide variety of applications in the automotive, electronics, pharmaceutical, robots, and semiconductor industries.

Lights combine illumination and indication
The WLS27 Multicolor LED Strip Lights feature multiple colors that both illuminate work areas and provide status indication. Any change in light color is a clear visual alert that can be seen even when operators are looking down or distracted, enabling faster response times. WLS27 lights are available in three- and five-color models in combinations of white, red, yellow, green and blue.
